Cheltenham Police Bike Rodeo

On May 1st 2010, four SAA members under the supervision of Dr. Eileen Rall went and performed hearing screening on 53 children at the Cheltenham Police Bike Rodeo. This event, held annually by the Cheltenham Police and Fire Department, attracts school-age children from all over Cheltenham and neighboring township to come and learn about bike safety. Salus University, formerly PCO, has a long history of participating in this event, providing vision hearing. This year, we have had the pleasure of joint venturing with the optometry students in providing vision and hearing screening to all participants ages ranging from 3 to 15 y.o. It is a legacy we hope to continue in the years to come as SAA becomes more involve with community outreach, and cross-modality screenings.

May is Better Hearing Month! Get your ear on!

Did you know...
1) Approximately 36 million Americans suffer from hearing loss.
2) More than half of the people with hearing loss are younger than age 65.
3) Hearing loss is the third most common health problem in the United States.
4) the stapes is the smallest bone in the human body. It is only 0.25 to 0.33 cm long [0.10 to 0.13 inches] and weighs only 1.9 to 4.3 milligrams
5) Exposure to noise level of 85 dB SPL or greater can put you at risk of noise induced hearing loss? Consider the following sounds then:
- 90 dB—Hair Dryers, blenders, and lawnmowers
- 100 dB—MP3 players at full volume
- 110 dB—Concerts (any music genre), car racing, and sporting events
- 120 dB—Jet planes at take off
- 130 dB—Ambulances
- 140 dB—Gun shots, fireworks, and custom car stereos at full volume
6) Fish do not have ears, but they can hear. They hear pressure changes through ridges on their bodies.
7) Crickets have their hearing organs in their knees.
8) Cats have amazing hearing ability. A cat's ear has 30 muscles that control the outer ear (by comparison, human ears only have six muscles). These muscles rotate 180 degrees, so the cat can hear in all directions without moving its head.
9) The word tragus originates from the Greek word tragos meaning male-goat because of the similarity to the tuft of hair that forms the goat's beard.
10) The color of an egg depends on the color of the hens ear lobe! Hens with white ear lobes lay white eggs. Hens with red ear lobes lay brown eggs. Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshires and Plymouth Rock chickens lay brown eggs. White Leghorns and Brown Leghorns lay white eggs.

Fourth year returns to share her experience

Felicia Stallings, Class of 2010 and fellow SAA member, returned to campus on March 29th, 2010 and gave an illuminating talk on her experience in intra-operative monitoring. We thank her for taking the time to come, and we are proud of her accomplishment.

DVD Drive a Success!

DVD Drive

Hello All,
As some of you may know, a few students and a faculty member of the George S. Osborne College of Audiology here at Salus will be leaving in a few days- linking up with the HEARt of the Village organization to provide free basic hearing health care services through a philanthropy mission in Kenya. These services will be provided to children living in group homes, whose families were effected by HIV.

Although the children have limited resources, they were at some point given a computer, an old projector, and a few DVDs. They have been using those resources to have huge movie nights, using the computer to play the movies and projecting it onto a wall. Although it doesn't seem like much to us I'm certain it's the highlight of their week. There are also children that are constantly medically monitored who have received donations of portable DVD players, to enjoy movies because they can not join the others in the corporate movie nights. As an additional gift to all of the children, the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) will be collecting and donating child friendly DVDs until Friday February 19, 2010 in the area near the cafe. We are asking: if you have any child friendly DVDs, please join us in giving to these children by placing it in the box entitled SAA DVD Drive near the cafe.
